Legal Solutions for Classic Vehicle Ownership

Attorney John V. Moore is a lifelong automobile enthusiast and avid motorsports fan.  He is a member of several grassroots motorsports organizations such as the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA), the National Auto Sport Association (NASA), the National Corvette Restorer’s Society (NCRS), and others. Attorney Moore can focus his vast consumer litigation experience to find solutions relating to your antique and collector car issues.

Owning a classic or collectible vehicle shouldn’t be complicated, even when the original title is missing. Our law firm helps car enthusiasts, collectors, restorers, and heirs legally obtain valid ownership documentation for antique and collectible vehicles when traditional titling is unavailable.

We assist clients with complex vehicle ownership issues, including:

  • Lost or missing titles
  • Antique and classic cars (typically 20+ years old)
  • Barn finds and project cars
  • Vehicles purchased at estate sales, auctions, or private transactions
  • Inherited vehicles without probate documentation
  • Out-of-state vehicle transfers
  • Vehicles never titled or last titled decades ago
  • Unregistered or abandoned vehicles on private property

Our firm handles the legal work so you don’t have to navigate confusing requirements alone.

A vehicle identification number (VIN) is the primary means of identifying a motor vehicle. Problems arise when two vehicles lay claim to the same VIN or chassis number. In those cases, the vehicle’s history, titles, and provenance must be carefully researched, examined, and legally proven.

Identity disputes often stem from restorations performed decades ago, when a vehicle was considered “too far gone” and a donor car was used to reduce costs. If the original vehicle was not destroyed, both vehicles may still exist and claim the same identity. These situations commonly involve so-called “rebody” cars: vehicles whose original factory body was replaced with a donor body, which was then assigned the original VIN, data plates, trim tags, or cowl tags. Such vehicles are frequently sold to unsuspecting buyers as authentic originals.

Disputes also arise in the racing context, where a crashed racecar was parted out and used to construct two or more vehicles, each claiming the same original identity.

Another form of identity dispute involves vehicles reconstructed around authentic paperwork from a rare car destroyed years ago. Often referred to as “air cars,” these vehicles are built using donor bodies and fraudulent VIN tags, body tags, and other identifying components. Although they may appear genuine, they typically lack verifiable pedigree, provenance, and continuous history, making them difficult or impossible to sell.

We represent clients in disputes involving:

  • Fraud and misrepresentation
  • Breach of contract
  • Auction disputes
  • Restoration disputes
  • VIN tampering
  • Ownership disputes
  • Estate / Probate litigation
  • Odometer fraud ("rollbacks") and false mileage affidavits
  • Rebody cars
  • “Numbers matching” misrepresentations
  • Restamped engines
  • Title fraud
  • Fake or altered documents

Can you help if I bought a car without a title?

Yes. This is one of the most common situations we handle, especially with older vehicles.

How long does the process take?

Timing varies based on state requirements and vehicle history, but we always aim for the most efficient legal path available.

Is this legal?

Absolutely. We use established, state‑recognized legal processes—not loopholes or questionable third‑party services.

Can I sell the car once the title is obtained?

Yes. Once properly titled, the vehicle can be sold, insured, or transferred like any other legally owned vehicle.
